How is the SmartyKat® Refillable Toy different than other catnip toys?
In almost every way! First, the SmartyKat™ Refillable Toy was designed specifically to give a long life of fun and function to your cat. Other catnip toys, which have a small amount of catnip sewn into the toy, will inevitably lose your cat's interest. That's because the active ingredient in catnip (aromatic oils) fade naturally over time. Once the thrill is gone, it's gone! The entire toy becomes useless. Because our toy is refillable AND durably constructed, you can keep the fun alive for your cat for months, even years to come with a quick refreshment of SmartyKat™ Certified Organic Catnip.
How much catnip should I fill the toy with?
We recommend using the catnip dispensing tube as a measuring and guiding device. Start by filling the toy with approximately 2/3 of the tube. This provides a nice fill with enough left over for your next refill. This amount will be more than enough for your cat to detect and will not overfill the toy.
Will the catnip leaves escape from the toy and make a mess?
If you have filled the toy and closed it according to directions, the seal formed by the hook and loop closures should be so tight that even the most vigorous cat won't be able to pry it open! However, take the following precautions to ensure the toy is closed properly:
- Fully open the toy before opening, so hook and loop closure strips are OUTSIDE the toy.
- Make sure catnip leaves are tucked INSIDE the toy.
- Carefully fold hook and loop closure back INSIDE toy, making sure no leaves are attached to closure strips.
- Keep seam tag OUTSIDE the toy.
Do I have to use the dispensing tube?
No, but we recommend it for quick, easy, tidy refillings. But seasoned users of the Refillable Toy use their fingers to add a pinch of fresh catnip to their toys.
Do I have to empty out the old catnip?
Not necessarily, but for best results, fill with a full refill of fresh SmartyKat™ Certified Organic Catnip. The catnip potency will be at its full potential.
How often should I change the catnip?
There is no exact answer to that since the evaporation of the oils which cause the catnip “reaction” will fade in different situations, seasons, etc. The best way of knowing WHEN is to look at your cat’s reaction to the toy. If he seems less interested than he was three weeks ago, put some new catnip in and see what happens. At the very least, change the catnip once a month to guarantee to strongest reaction.
