Grooming

The Bichon Frise features hair that does not shed but requires regular grooming and trimming. Bichons should be brushed regularly to remove dead hair between trims as the hair grows. A monthly bath will help keep the Bichon Frise white coat clean, and skin moisturized. An excellent choice for allergy sufferers, this breed does not shed fur like most dog breeds. Be sure to check this breed’s ears regularly to avoid wax or debris buildup, as its small ears are prone to infection. Dental care should also be a regular grooming routine for the Bichon Frise, as small breeds are prone to dental issues.

Health Issues

The majority of Bichons Frises are healthy dogs, though some can suffer from a few health issues. This small breed is known to lose teeth, and may suffer from gum infections if not following routine dental care. The Bichon is prone to skin allergies, including skin sensitivities and flea allergy. The breed can encounter some genetic diseases such as weakness in knee joints (patellar luxation), genetic cataracts and other eye diseases. As with most dog breeds, working with breeders who follow proper breeding guidelines can help reduce the occurrence of genetic diseases.

Temperament

A wonderful family pet, this breed is known to be affectionate and easily trained. Eager to please, they love being in the spotlight to “perform” for their people. As little balls of energy, the Bichon does need daily exercise through play or short walks. While it doesn’t take much to exercise their tiny legs, pet parents should expect to witness frequent bursts of energy, known as the “Bichon Blitz”. A game of fetch or squeaky toy fun might be all that is needed to tire out your Bichon. After physical stimulation this breed will cuddle to relax with his human companions. Be sure to provide a high walled cuddle bed for sleeping and daytime lounging.
